European Surveillance of Antimicrobial Consumption Project

In 2001, DG-SANCO (European Commission) granted funding to set up the ESAC project, and subsequent funding has come from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).   ESAC is an international network of surveillance systems aiming to collect data on antibiotic use in Europe, and now involves over 20 countries.   The project lead is Herman Goossens of the University of Antwerp, Belgium.

The main aim of the ESAC project is to maintain a continuous, comprehensive database on human antimicrobial consumption (primary plus secondary care) in all European countries.
