Regenerating antibacterial drug discovery and development - new papers published in JAC

The BSAC initiative- The Urgent Need Working - Regeneration of Antibacterial Drug Discovery and Development - established in late 2009 under the chairmanship of Professor Richard Wise has concluded its deliberations and is pleased to present its report.

The following reports have since been published, by the named authors on behalf of the working party in the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy:

Through a series of expert evidence days and a national stakeholder meeting, the initiative examined the barriers to and opportunities for improving antibacterial drug discovery and development. These meetings were supported by special advisers from the UK, Europe and the US, reflected the global nature of the challenges that face us in this industry.

The report offers an plan for action and Council has agreed to establish a steering committee to progress this work through collaboration with peer and patient focussed organisations, industry and other relevant parties.

The overall aim is to not only raise awareness, but to stimulate debate amongst health professionals, regulators and government that will lead to new, innovative and lasting approaches and restimulate interest in antibacterial drug discovery.

Further information on planned activities will be posted in due course. Meanwhile anyone interested in contributing to this important initiative should contact Tracey Guise, Executive Director - 0121 236 1988, in the first instance.
