Purpose:
The PhD studentship scheme is designed to ensure a flow of first-class students into the field of antimicrobial chemotherapy, providing them with an excellent training in research.
Entry requirement:
Awarded or expected 1st class or high upper 2nd class degree, or MSc with merit or distinction.
Duration of grant:
BSAC invites applications to support a PhD Student for up to 4 years duration.
Value of grant:
Up to maximum of £25,000 pa for the duration of the grant.
Number of awards:
One award each alternate year subject to availability of funding.
Award may include:
• Student stipend
• Tuition fees (set by the research institution)
• Research consumables, directly attributable to the project
How to apply:
The application must be made by an established investigator who will be the supervisor who has previously received three or less studentships and may be for named or unnamed students.
What to submit:
Completed application form comprising:
· Student, names of two supervisors and institution details
· Detailed research proposal
· Statement detailing the scientific techniques for which the student will receive training
· Budget detailing annual costs (stipend, tuition fees, consumables)
· Training record for each named supervisor
Accompanying documents (supervisor)
· Letter of support from the Head of Department
· Brief CV of the supervisors (2 A4 sides max)
Accompanying documents (student)
· Record of candidate’s academic performance
· Full CV of the candidate and statement of career intentions
· Two academic letters of reference
NOTE: for non-UK university degrees: evidence from Graduate Office that degree held conforms to 2.1 degree or higher
Number of copies required:
One electronic copy [all required documentation MUST be collated in order and saved as a PDF document].
Next submission deadline / next awarded: 1 November 2012 for award in May 2013
Decision process:
Applications will be issued for external peer review, after which they will be considered by the BSAC Grants Committee. The Committee usually meets in April/May of each year. Decisions will be notified by the end-May.
